Black Pipes
Black steel pipe is made of steel that has not been galvanized. Its name comes from the scaly, dark-colored iron oxide coating on its surface. Thus, it’s used in applications that don’t require galvanized steel.
Uses
Black pipe is a high-strength pipe that has an iron oxide coating. Hence, its common uses are gas distribution to homes, carrying potable water or hot water from boilers, or draining wastes. Similarly, the oil Industry uses black pipes to transport oil.
One of the most common uses of the black iron pipes is for the heating system of houses. Because of its unique property of being a good heat conductor, it therefore means that it transporting heat is one of its uses. The black iron pipe has a thermal conductivity ranging from 26K up to 37.5K, which means it could transfer heat well.
Features
Black pipe installation can be underground, which is not true of all piping. It is available in lengths that are pre-threaded. A hardware store will typically cut the pipe to order and thread it. Larger diameter black pipe is welded instead of threaded.
Protecting electrical wiring is one of black pipes uses. It is harder to work with than many other types of pipe, and requires cast iron fittings and special tools, such as a tube cutter and a pipe vise.”
